It’s caused from plaque from not brushing/flossing your teeth well. Or If it feels rough it could be calculus, or it may be some type of decalcifcation. I’ve seen it a lot in people who used to have braces. You can normally get a nice polish and get rid of it.

Candi is right but also, sometimes it can have cavities under and you may need to see your dentist to get rid of it and put fillings in
